The Starburst Active Database Rule System
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper describes our development of the Starburst Rule System, an active database rules facility integrated into the Starburst extensible relational database system at the IBM Almaden Research Center. The Starburst rule language is based on arbitrary database state transitions rather than tupleor statement-level changes, yielding a clear and exible execution semantics. The rule system has been implemented completely. Its rapid implementation was facilitated by the extensibility features of Starburst, and rule management and rule processing is integrated into all aspects of database processing.

The Starburst Rule System: Language Design, Implementation, and Applications
This short paper provides an overview of the Starburst Rule System, a production rules facility integrated into the Starburst extensible database system. The rule language is based on arbitrary database state transitions rather than tupleor statement-level changes, yielding a clear and exible execution semantics. The rule system was implemented rapidly using the extensibility features of Starbu...
متن کاملImplementing Set-Oriented Production Rules as an Extension to Starburst
This paper describes the implementation of a set-oriented database production rule language proposed in earlier papers. Cur implementation uses the extensibility features of the Starburst database system, and rule exccution is fully integrated into database query and transaction processing.
متن کاملLanguage Constructs for Programming Active Databases
This paper presents database programming language constructs that. can be used to realize a variety of different semantics for rule application in active database syst.ems. The primary novel feature introduced is the “delayed update”, or delta, which is a first-class value representing a set of proposed modifications to the underlying persistent store. Deltas can be created, inspected, and comb...
متن کاملA Framework for the Specification of Active Rule Language Semantics
We present a formal framework that can be used to specify and study a number of different semantics for rule execution in active databases. We shall consider the core of several active rule languages that are already available (e.g., Ariel, Starburst and HiPAC) but whose rule execution is specified only by informal descriptions. The framework is based on a generic active rule language and relie...
